Life With A Feeding Tube Is Not "Worse Than Death"

I have had a feeding tube for over three years. Gastroparesis and intestinal dysmotility mean my stomach no longer functions and my small intestine does not absorb nutrients well. Having a feeding tube that bypasses my stomach and delivers a partially digested solution into my small intestine ensures my body can still get essential nutrients, calories and fluid. Vagal Nerve Stimulation (VNS)

What is it?

These devices have previously had good results in use for epilepsy, headache and depression. It is a non-invasive therapy which requires no surgery. It is a hand held device which can be placed over the vagal nerve (in the neck). It can be used intermittently throughout the day at timed intervals. 

 

How effective is it?

This is where the data stops! It is proven to work well in the aforementioned conditions but its use in gastroparesis and pseudo-obstruction are still experimental. Only a handful of patients has been offered a trial with these devices, however, if results show promise they will, of course, be offering more extensive trials! We will try and keep you updated here with the latest news on this one!
