Friday the 4th of July 2014 saw the first Bowel Independence Day Conference at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Durham City Centre. The day was hosted by County Durham and Darlington Foundation Trust with Guest speeches from Julia Aitken (patient representative) Dr Adam Farmer (Wingate Institute) Professor Yiannakou & Dr Emmanuel
Of course, GIFT could not pass up the invitation to go and have our say so we went along to recruit some new members and tell everyone what we do! We were overwhelmed by the warm response we received from everyone attending. We heard from several guest speakers who gave us a clear insight into their specialist services. It was refreshing to hear so many professionals taking an interest in our "Cinderella" condition. It highlighted the need for patient support services and we have established links with an emerging regional support group via Durham hospital trust.
We were also delighted to be able to present the first of our contributions to research with £1500 going to the Wingate Institute to fund Vagal Nerve Stimulation projects and £1500 to Professor Yiannakou and his team at Durham, to fund a regional patient support service!
Furthermore, we have been invited to visit the Wingate Institute and find out more about the research they are involved in. So you can better believe we will be taking them up on it and spreading the word again in the near future!!!!
